Characteristics

Erect annual herb 18–35 cm. tall, with spreading 4-ribbed axillary branchlets; stems scabrid-papillose.. Leaf-blades linear-lanceolate, 1.5–4.5 cm. long, 1.5–6 mm. wide, attenuate to an acute apex, cuneate at the base, scabridulous above with very short papillae or glabrous, scabridulous on the midvein beneath and on the margins; petiole not developed; stipule-sheath 0.5–1.5 mm. long, the margins with 5–7 fimbriae up to 3 mm. long.. Flowers heterostylous, in terminal monochasial raceme-like inflorescences, the rhachis slender with pairs of flowers well separated, the internodes 1–2.5 cm. long; pedicels 3–8 mm. long.. Calyx-tube shallowly campanulate, 0.7 mm. long, glabrous; lobes triangular, 0.6–0.8 mm. long, glabrous.. Corolla white; tube narrowly funnel-shaped, 1.5 mm. long, sparsely pilose at the throat; lobes 1.2–1.6 mm. long; style 0.7 mm. long in short-styled flowers, 2.5 mm. long in long-styled flowers.. Capsule depressed subglobose, 0.9–1.2 mm. tall, 1.8 mm. wide, glabrous, the beak not raised.. Seeds not seen.. Fig. 40/18, p. 270.
