Characteristics

Scandent liane. Stipules lanceolate, 0.7–2 mm long, 0.3–1 mm wide. Leaves: petiole 25–100 mm long; lamina elliptic, lanceolate-ovate or ovate, 70–240 mm long, 45–160 mm wide; base cordate or rounded; tip acuminate or acute; palminerved with 5 veins from base, 7–9 lateral veins per side of midrib and reticulate interlateral tertiary veins; glands ± sessile, ± circular, 2.5–3 mm diam.; juvenile leaves trilobed. Inflorescences paniculate. Male flowers 2.5–3 mm long, 1.5–2 mm diam.; pedicels 2–3 mm long. Female flowers c. 4 mm long and 3 mm diam.; pedicels 1–2 mm long. Fruit subglobose, 45–50 mm long, c. 50 mm diam., 2-or 3-lobed with a pointed apex. Seeds 20–30 mm long, 15–20 mm wide, smooth, pale grey-brown. Flowers have not been collected from Australian material, and the description is supplemented from New Guinean collections at BRI.

A vine. It can grow 30 m tall. The stem can be 8 cm across. The sap is red. The leaf blades re 13-25 cm long by 9-17 cm wide. The leaf stalk is 7-14 cm long. There are 2 glands near the base of the leaf. It has modified flower parts that act as tendrils. The flowers are in a branched panicle. There are more male flowers than female. The male flowers are 3 mm across and the female flowers are 5-6 mm across. The fruit is about 6 cm across. It is orange and has 3 angles. The seeds are round and 2.5 mm across.

Environment

It is a tropical plant. It grows at low altitudes from sea level to about 50 m above sea level in Cape York in Australia. It grows at higher altitudes in Papua New Guinea. It occurs at Bulolo at 700 m. It grows in rainforest.
