Characteristics

Plant glabrous; twigs angular to slightly winged.. Leaves alternate, sessile, rather fleshy, glaucous, cordate, 3–5 cm. long, 2–4 cm. wide, amplexicaul, with 1–2 pairs of strongly ascending lateral nerves from near the base.. Flowers clustered in the axils; pedicels 2–3 mm. long; bract shortly cupular, lobed and keeled below, 2 mm. long.. Receptacle 1 mm. long.. Calyx tubular, 3–4 mm. long, subtruncate to slightly lobed.. Corolla 3–3.3 cm. long, yellow, fading yellow-orange, distal part of the lobes sometimes orange, opening by a unilateral split; tube 1.2–1.3 cm. long, with a ring of 5 small downwardly directed shortly hairy flaps just below the V-split inside; lobes linear, remaining erect after anthesis.. Stamen-filaments attached to the base of the lobes, coiling inwards and shedding anthers at anthesis, with a distinct tooth in front of the anther.. Berry red, obovoid, 8 mm. long, 6 mm. in diameter, excluding the persistent calyx.
