Characteristics

Twigs almost glabrous to densely covered with short stiff spreading hairs.. Leaves alternate; petiole 2–6 mm. long; lamina thinly coriaceous, grey-green to slightly glaucous, linear-lanceolate to elliptic, obovate or oblanceolate, 1–5.5 cm. long, 0.4–4 cm. wide, bluntly pointed to rounded at the apex, subglabrous to densely velvety-hairy on both surfaces, with 1–2 pairs of strongly ascending nerves from a little above the base or venation obscure.. Flowers clustered in the axils or at nodes below; pedicel 0.5–2 mm. long; bract cupular, 2–3 mm. long, subglabrous to densely hairy with longer cilia.. Receptacle 1–1.2 mm. long.. Calyx tubular, 4–6 mm. long, ciliolate.. Corolla 2–2.7 cm. long, usually yellow fading orange, but sometimes red, opening by a unilateral split; tube narrow, 6–8 mm. long; lobes narrow, recurving and twisted to coiled after anthesis, expanded at the base to form pouches around vents of maturing buds.. Filaments attached at the base of the lobes, involute and shedding anthers at anthesis.. Berry red, obovoid-ellipsoid, 6–7 mm. long, 4–5 mm. in diameter, verrucose.. Fig. 4/4–8.
