Characteristics

Shrub 1–3 m. tall; both normal white and swollen-based hairs usually present on young stems, leaf-rhachides and inflorescences.. Leaves usually tufted; stipules up to 4 mm. long; rhachis up to 25 mm. long; leaflets 7–11, elliptic-oblong, up to 7 mm. long and 3.5 mm. wide, glabrous or with white hairs beneath, especially on the midrib and at the margin, and occasionally on the upper surface, also sometimes a few swollen-based hairs on the margin, which is flat; midrib, but not the lateral veins, dark beneath.. Inflorescence 1–2-flowered, the rhachis 1–2 mm. long; bracts and bracteoles under 2 mm. long; pedicel up to 12 mm. long.. Calyx glabrous or with white hairs on the margin and sometimes swollen-based hairs near the base; receptacle-cup ± 1 mm. deep, 2–3 mm. long and 2 mm. wide; tube 2–3 mm. long; upper lobes rounded at apex, 3–4 mm. long; lateral lobes ovate, pointed, 3 mm. long; lower lobe boat-shaped, mucronate, 4 mm. long.. Corolla persistent, glabrous, cream or greenish-cream with a well-marked network of crimson or brownish-crimson veins; claw of standard 2 mm. long, blade broadly ovate, truncate or rounded at the base, 11–14 mm. long, 10–16 mm. wide, with 2 narrow but prominent ± horizontal basal appendages; claw of wing 3–4 mm. long, blade 12–13 mm. long, 5.5–8 mm. wide, the upper margin nearly straight, shortly auriculate at the base, the lower margin curved; claws of keel 4–4.5 mm. long, the blade 10–12 mm. long, 6–9 mm. wide, briefly and obtusely rostrate, its upper margin almost straight except for a basal auricle, the lower margin strongly curved, almost semicircular.. Stamens (10) or, less often, (5) + (5), united part 8–10 mm., free parts 3–6 mm. long, the vexillary stamen sometimes partially free, the lowermost stamen longer than the others; anthers 1.1–1.3 mm. long.. Cylindrical disc ± 0.5 mm. deep.. Ovary soon becoming arcuate, 3–4-ovulate, covered with swollen-based hairs up to 0.6 mm. long; stipe glabrous at the base, 1–2 mm. long; style sparsely pubescent near the base, 8–12 mm. long.. Fruit strongly curved, protruding beyond the corolla, even the basal segment clearly visible between the gaping petals, pubescent, with or without small tubercles not above 0.3 mm. in diameter; segments 10–11 mm. long, 5–7 mm. wide, up to 2 mm. thick..
