Characteristics

Herb 60-100 cm tall, forming large tufts. Leaves lax, grass-like, 25-60 cm long, 2.5-6 mm wide, glabrous, margins often scabrid. Inflorescence axis straight, with numerous lanceolate scape bracts 1-4 cm long each subtending 3-5 single flowers on pedicels up to 1 cm long, sometimes with a branch up to 8 cm long bearing 3-5 flowers. Each flower enclosed by 2 ovate spathes 6-10 mm long. Sepals and petals obovate with acute apices, 15-19 mm long, 7-10 mm wide, the petals slightly narrower, glabrous. Filaments 4-6 mm long, connate 1-2 mm at base; anthers 3-5 mm long. Style branches 4-7 mm long; stigmas entire. Capsule obtuse, 12-20 mm long; pedicel to 1 mm long. Seeds ovoid, c. 2 mm long.
