Characteristics

O. armatum is an extremely xeromorphic shrub with divaricate branches and twigs, ending in hard spines. It is easily distinguished from the other species in sect. Spinosa by its acicular, pungent and canaliculate leaves. The leaves are canaliculate above, and clothed with dense, canescent wool. The remaining part of the leaf is very sparsely glanduloso-pubescent and, at a younger stage, thinly floccosely woolly. The achenes are all 3-winged without an apical cavity. The wings are rigid, semipellucid and stramineous, with a dark zone at the base; they may be up to 3.5 mm broad.
