Herba annua 2-5(-7) dm alta aromatice odorata; caulis erectus vel adscendens teres striatus glanduloso-puberulus partibus vetustioribus saepe glabratus herbaceus vel basi lignescens primo subsimplex postremo multiramosus, ramis inferioribus adscendentibus; internodia ad basin caulis brevissima sursum accrescentia usque 10 cm longa. Folia alterna vix crassiuscula glanduloso-puberula vel subglabra; inferiora oblonga vel oblanceolata basin versus in petiolum sensim longeque angustata petiolo semiamplexicauli incluso usque 10 cm longa usque 2 cm lata apice obtusa vel rotundata margine repanda vel sinuato-dentata, dentibus calloso-mucronatis; cetera oblanceolata vel oblongo-linearia sessilia vel rarius subpetiolata obtuse auriculata apice acuta vel obtusa margine sinuato-dentata-remote denticulata (summa subintegerrima); nervus medius crassus subtus elevatus, nervi secundarii in foliis inferioribus utrinque 1-3 conspicui. Inflorescentiae in apicibus caulis et ramorum laxe corymbosae saepe multicapitulatae; pedicelli capitulorum usque 10 cm longi dense glanduloso-puberuli bracteis laxis linearibus vel lineari-subulatis subintegerrimis instructi. Involucri squamae aequilongae c. 13 in statu florendi subbiseriatae oblongoellipticae 7-8 mm longae 3-4 mm latae acutae vel subobtusae margine latissime albido-scariosae. Flores radii involucri squamas numero aequantes; ligulae aurantiacae-flavae involucrum 2-3-plo superantes; flores disci numerosi superne atro-violacei inferne flavidi. Achaenia 7-8 mm longa triangularia trialata, alis 2.5-3 mm latis semipellucidis albidis saepe paullum violaceis; latus tangentiale plerumque echinulatum rugosum foveolatum fenestratum, fenestra ovali c. 2 mm longa, latera radialia efenestrata saepe sublaevia.

Leaves alternate, oblong to oblanceolate, margin ± sinuous to sinuate-dentate, lower ones petiolate, upper ones sessile, auriculate and half clasping at base. Flowerheads radiate, corymbose, terminal; involucral bracts with white scarious margins; ray florets 2-3 times longer than involucre, orange; disc florets violet or purple. Cypselas 7-8 mm long, triangular, 3-winged, with 1 apical window.
