Herba annua 2-5 dm alta viscidula; caulis erectus teres striatus simplex vel ramosus herbaceus vel basi lignescens usque 0.5 cm crassus breviter glanduloso-pilosus vel parte inferiore subglaber. Folia alterna membranacea sparse pilosa vel subglabra margine sinuato-dentata vel repanda apice obtusa; basalia conferta oblonga vel oblanceolata 3-6(-10) cm longa 1-3 cm lata basin versus in petiolum 1-3 cm longum cuneatim angustata; caulina remota sursum decrescentia, inferiora subpetiolata, cetera sessilia, omnia semiamplexicaulia saepe ± auriculata oblonga-oblanceolata (vel summa lineari-oblonga); nervus medius subtus elevatus, nervi secundarii 1-3 ± conspicui. Capitula in apicibus caulis et ramorum laxe corymbosa vel rarius solitaria, fructifera nutantia; pedicelli capitulorum dense glanduloso-puberuli 2-5 cm longi bracteis paucis lanceolato-linearibus vel lineari-subulatis 0.3-1.5 cm longis instructi. Involucri squamae 8-10 in statu florendi subbiseriatae fere aequilongae oblongae-(ob)ovatae 5-7 mm longae 2-4 mm latae obtusae vel rarius subacutae margine latissime albidoscariosae. Flores radii involucri squamas numero aequantes; ligulae flavae interdum basi atro-violaceae involucrum non vel vix superantes; corollae florum disci superne atro-violaceae inferne flavidae. Achaenia 8-9 mm longa triangularia trialata, alis semipellucidis stramineis saepe ex parte violaceis; latus tangentiale ± echinatum vel muricatum foveolatum apice fenestra instructum, latera radialia efenestrata vulgo sublaevia.

Glandular-hairy, aromatic annual, up to 400 mm tall. Leaves alternate, sparsely pilose to glabrous, oblanceolate or linear, margin sinuate-dentate, lower ones petiolate, upper ones auriculate and half clasping at base. Flowerheads radiate, few in branched panicles, rarely solitary; involucral bracts broadly scariose; ray florets equalling or slightly longer than involucre, yellow to orange, occasionally dark-spotted at base; disc florets mauve or brown. Cypselas 8-9 mm long, triangular, 3-winged, with 1 apical window.
