Herba perennis 1-2(-4) dm alta; caules singulares vel pauci e caudice subterraneo lignoso usque 0.7 cm crasso exeuntes erecti vel adscendentes saepe flexuosi saepe e basi ramosi; caules et rami teretes striati parum lignescentes ± dense hispidi, pilis albidis cellularibus glanduliferis usque 2 mm longis, vel interdum partibus vetustioribus glabrati. Folia alterna membranacea crassiuscula viridia vel saepe glauca dense vel parce hispida vel rarius glabrata; basalia conferta ± conspicue rosulata (ob)lanceolata vel oblonga vel pauca obovata basin versus in petiolum sensim angustata petiolo incluso 2-7(-12) cm longa 0.5-2 cm lata, apice obtusa vel subacuta margine remote denticulata-grosse sinuato-dentata-repanda (vel rarius pauca lyrata), dentibus utrinque 2-5(-10), vel ex infimis singularia integerrima; folia caulina et ramealia iremota, inferiora basalibus similia sed vulgo angustiora linearioblanceolata, cetera apicem caulium et ramorum versus decrescentia lanceolata-linearia sessilia saepe ± auriculata apice acuto-acuminata margine remote dentata vel interdum integerrima; nervus medius albidus subtus elevatus, nervi laterales saepe inconspicui. Capitula in apicibus caulium et ramorum solitaria vel rarius in corymbum laxum disposita pedunculata; pedunculi longitudine variabiles (rarius usque 10 cm longi) bracteis paucis remotis acuminatis, inferioribus lanceolato-linearibus saepe denticulatis, superioribus lineari-subulatis integerrimis instructi. Involucri squamae 12-15 subuniseriatae fere aequilongae anguste oblongae-ellipticae-lanceolatae 4-6 mm longae 1-2.5 mm latae apice acutae vel acuminatae per medium dorsum virides margine ± late albidoscariosae saepe passim violascentes vel purpurascentes. Flores radii involucri squamas numero aequantes; ligulae flavae supra interdum basin versus atroviolaceae subtus saepe ± violascentes involucrum fere duplo superantes; flores disci flavi; appendix apicalis antherarum atroviolacea. Achaenia glabra 9-12 mm longa leviter incurva triangularia late trialata; latera plerumque glandulosa sulco longitudinali ± conspicuo instructa transverse costata echinulata foveolata vel rarius (turn imprimis radialia) sublaevia; alae membranaceae semipellucidae albidae vel passim violaceae usque 4.5 mm latae; cavernula apicalis trifenestrata, fenestris ovato-oblongis c. 1-2 mm longis c. 0.5-1 mm latis.
