Characteristics

Frulex 3-9 dm altus divaricate ramosus totus dense glanduloso-puberulus viscidus (exsiccatus asperulus) aromatice odoratus; rami et ramuli intricati rigidi teretes leviter sulcati plurimi in spinas transformati; internodia 2-5 mm longa. Folia alterna patentia sessilia linearia vel lineari-lanceolala 1-2.5 cm longa 0.1-0.3 cm lata acida vel obtusiuscula margine integerrima vel remote dentata, dentibus 0.5-1.5 mm altis; nervus medius subtus prominens. Capitula in apicibus ramulorum solitaria pedunculata; pedunculi rigidi 0.5-3(-5) cm longi bracteis paucis lineari-subulatis 1-3 mm longis instructi capitulum versus sensim angustati, capitulis post vel rarius ante fructificationem delapsis, spinam formantes. Involucri squamae c. 8 fere aequilongae uniseriatae vel in statu florendi subbiseriatae (ob)lanceolatae-obovatae (2-)3-5 mm longae 1-2 mm latae acutae-acuminatae virides apice saepe partim rubro-violascentes margine scariosae. Flores radii involucri squamas numero aequantes; ligulae flavae involucrum plus duplo superantes; flores disci flavi involucro fere aequilongi. Achaenia matura dura glabra saepe minute glandulosa basi acuta forma et magnitudine variabilia usque 8 mm longa usque 4 mm diam. obtuse vel acute vel interdum obsolete triangulata vel rarius minute trialata; latera sublaevia vel longitudinaliter 1-3-sulcata sub apice saepe foveola instructa.
