Characteristics

Scandent shrub; branchlets terete, ribbed. Leaves alternate, 3-nerved, petiolate. Flowers hermaphrodite, in long leafy terminal racemes or panicles, often solitary in the axil of each leaf-like bract, rarely in 3(–7)-flowered dichasia; bract free from peduncle; bracteoles 2, minute. Perianth tube cylindric; lobes 5, valvate. Stamens 5, inserted at base of perianth lobes; anthers attached to face of lobe by a conspicuous tuft of hairs. Disk lobed, distinct. Ovary with 2–3 ovules from apex of erect twisted free-central placenta, the tip of which is drawn out into a point; stigma ± capitate, very obscurely 2–5-lobed. Fruit indehiscent, globose, endocarp bony, obscurely 5-ribbed, outer coat fleshy, crowned with persistent perianth.
