Characteristics

Corolla white, glabrous outside, throat and upper third of tube a little hairy inside, tube (3.2)3.8–4.5(5) mm. long, narrowly infundibuliform, lobes (2.8)3.2–3.8 x 0.6–1 mm., ± lanceolate; filaments c. 2.8–3.5 mm. long, glabrous, anthers c. 0.6–0.9 mm. long; style 6–9(10.5) mm. long, stigma lobes c. 0.8–1.5 mm. long; ovary c. 0.7–1 x 0.5–0.7 mm., ± densely covered with short, ± curled hairs, the carpel crowned by the enlarged calyx lobe sometimes less hairy than the other and occasionally smaller, ± reduced.

Leaves decussate but sometimes pseudo-verdcillate; blades spreading to ascending, 23–40(47) x 3–6(7.5) mm., lanceolate or linear-lanceolate, glabrous except for a few short hairs on margins and midvein above; petioles c. 0–1(1.5) mm. long; stipular sheath with usually 3 small setae.
Calyx: enlarged, foliaceous lobe c. 2.5–4(5) x 0.8 mm., ± lanceolate, glabrous or sometimes margins shortly hairy, setiform lobes c. 0.2–1 mm. long.
Inflorescence c. 20–30-flowered; ± head-like when in flower, often much elongated, ± spike-like, up to c. 9(12) cm. long when in fruit.
Seed brownish-black, c. 1.1–1.3 x 0.5–0.9 mm., ± ovoid, dorsal side convex, often ± keeled, ventral side strongly concave.
Fruit brownish; mericarps 1.5–2 x (0.4)0.6–1 mm., the mericarp crowned by the enlarged calyx lobe sometimes without seed.
Stems slender, up to c. 1 m. long, usually much-branched, with hairs in 2 rows; internodes (much) longer than leaves.
Bud claviform, limb and tube not distinct from each other.
