Characteristics

Perennial tufted herb with 3–20 simple or sparsely branched stems 6.5–20 cm. tall, densely covered with long spreading hairs or with shorter bifarious hairs; rootstock slender (? but never annual as first reported by me).. Leaves paired; blades elliptic or the lower almost ovate, 0.7–2.6 cm. long, 0.4–1 cm. wide, subacute at the apex, cuneate at the base, usually with revolute margins, glabrous above or with a few hairs on the base of the midrib or shortly pilose, hairy beneath, sometimes only near and on the lower part of the midrib; petiole 1–2 mm. long, glabrous or densely hairy; stipules with 3 subulate fimbriae 0.5–1 mm. long from a short base.. Flowers in small terminal heads ± 1 cm. across.. Calyx-tube subglobose, 1 mm. in diameter, densely covered with white hairs; lobes 5 or all but foliaceous ones obsolete; foliaceous lobes 1–2, often with 1–2 smaller ones added, 2.8–6.5 mm. long, 1–2.3 mm. wide, hairy or glabrescent, rest ± obsolete.. Corolla white, lilac-blue, red or mauve; buds with limb abruptly expanded into an ovoid head, glabrous or hairy; tube narrowly filiform, 3.5–6 mm. long, 0.2 mm. wide, glabrous or with scattered hairs; lobes 4–5, oblong-elliptic, 2.5 mm. long, 0.6 mm. wide, glabrous.. Stamens 4–5, exserted 2.2 mm.; filaments glabrous.. Style filiform, exserted 0.8 mm.; lobes filiform, 1.8 mm. long.. Capsule subglobose, 2 mm. in diameter, hairy.. Seeds subglobose, 1.25 mm. long, 1 mm. wide, concave dorsally, depressed ventrally, reticulate and ± keeled, subacute at the apex, ± truncate at the base.

Stems 6–15(20) cm. long, ± erect, often unbranched, hairy all over or with 2 rows of hairs.
Perennial tufted herb with few to c. 20 stems from a ± woody rootstock.
Fruit yellowish-brown to dark brown; mericarps c. 2 x 1.5 mm.
