Species

Angiosperms > Gentianales > Rubiaceae > Otiophora

Characteristics

Perennial herb or subshrub 0.15–1 m. tall, with several erect or straggling branched stems from a woody base; stems with white hairs in 2 narrow lines on the upper parts, glabrous below.. Leaves pseudoverticillate and appearing to be in whorls of 6–10, an effect due to non-developed leafy branches in the axils of the 2 main stem leaves; blades lanceolate, 1–5 cm. long, 1–8 mm. wide, acute, somewhat coriaceous, the margins often slightly revolute, entirely glabrous or with a few short hairs on the margins and mid vein above, sessile; stipules pubescent, fimbriate into ± 5 segments (1–)1.5–4 mm. long, from a broad saccate persistent base.. Flowers in heads or very compact subcylindrical spikes (1.5–)2–3 cm. long and sometimes with a few lax flowers beneath the main part of the inflorescence; sometimes lateral inflorescences arise in the axils of the leaves of the uppermost node these sometimes appearing to coalesce with the main inflorescence to form a single compact head.. Calyx-tube elongate-oblong, 1.5 mm. long, ± 1 mm. wide, densely hairy; lobes 5, 1 foliaceous, linear-lanceolate, 3–5 mm. long, 0.5–1 mm. wide, acute, hairy, particularly on the margins, rest small, setiform but often somewhat dilated at the apex, hairy.. Corolla white, pinkish or crimson; buds with limb very abruptly expanded into a subcylindrical head, the base of which forms a right-angle with the filiform tube; tube 5–8 mm. long, 0.25 mm. wide; lobes lanceolate, 3–5.5 mm. long, 1 mm. wide, with scattered hairs at the apex outside.. Stamens 5, exserted for 3.5–5 mm.; filaments filiform, with ± 1 mm. close to the base somewhat dilated and covered with long white hairs.. Style tenuously filiform, the stigma bifid, lobes filiform, ± 1 mm. long, style and stigma together exserted 3–4 mm.. Fruit yellowish brown, elongate-ovoid, 3–4 mm. long, 1.5–2 mm. wide, slightly to densely hairy.. Seeds brownish, oblong, 2 mm. long, 0.75 mm. wide, often distinctly square-cut at both ends, granulate, somewhat keeled for practically the whole length of the dorsal face.
