Characteristics

Acaulescent or rarely a shortly stemmed perennial herb, with a vertical rhizome up to 18 cm. long arising from the top of an ovoid 1–1.5 cm. long bulb.. Leaves 3-foliolate, usually appearing in a rosette but sometimes spaced and alternate; petioles widening at the base, either glabrous or with long spreading hairs; leaflets sessile, subcircular to obovate, rounded or shallowly emarginate at apex, cuneate, glabrous above and with a few hairs at least on the midrib beneath, sometimes gland-dotted at the edge.. Flowers pink, purplish or blue in pseudumbels; peduncles arising from the leaf-rosette or subtended by cauline bracts, up to over 20 cm. long and usually longer than the petioles; bracts variable, short and linear to elongate and lanceolate, rarely with apical calli; pedicels up to 2 cm. long, with spreading hairs.. Sepals ovate-lanceolate, 4–7 mm. long, acute, sparsely hairy, with or without orange apical calli.. Petals up to 16 mm. long, hairy in part on the outside or glabrous..
