Species

Angiosperms > Oxalidales > Oxalidaceae > Oxalis

Characteristics

Perennial herb with stems creeping or decumbent, to 40 cm long, sparsely to densely hairy, the hairs spreading and/or retrorse; taproot absent; bulb and bulbils absent. Indumentum of simple eglandular hairs, occasionally with septate hairs on the capsules. Stipules inconspicuous to moderate-sized, c. 1.5 mm long, rounded to truncate, often hidden by apical hairs when young, usually densely hairy, densely ciliate. Leaves cauline, fasciculate, trifoliolate; petiole usually 0.5–4 cm long, densely covered with spreading hairs; leaflets subsessile, obovate-cuneate, 4–14 mm long, 4–16 mm wide, bilobed (sinus to c. one-fifth leaflet length), green, sparsely to densely pubescent above, more densely hairy below, margins ciliate, lobes oblong to obovate, apices rounded and 2–12 mm apart. Inflorescences axillary, flowers 1–4 per peduncle, usually held a little above leaf level; peduncle 25–130 mm long, densely covered with spreading hairs; pedicels (4–) 8–27 mm long, erect or reflexed in fruit (but capsule erect). Bracts situated at the base or at middle of pedicels, ± linear-subulate, 1–3 mm long, with ascending, antrorse hairs, calli absent. Sepals elliptic, 3–4.5 mm long, ciliate, ecallose. Petals obovate, 6–12 mm long, yellow, glabrous. Stamens at 2 levels; filaments glabrous. Ovary hairy. Styles 1.4–2.2 mm long, densely hairy, the hairs appressed-antrorse. Capsules broadly ellipsoid to ellipsoid, 7–9 mm long, 3–4 mm diam., retrorse-hairy with short simple hairs and longer overlying patent septate hairs. Seeds 1.5–2 mm long, transversely ribbed with 7–11 ribs, the ribs narrow, the grooves wide and deep, brown, uniformly coloured or ribs with faint greyish lines or blotches.
