Characteristics

Perennial herb with stem reduced, appearing absent, roots fibrous; bulb globose, 1–2 cm long, fibrous, outer surface light brown; bulbils formed from the old bulb. Indumentum of simple, eglandular hairs. Stipules c. 2 mm long, tapering into petiole. Leaves 5–15, palmately trifoliolate; petiole 1.5–6 cm long; leaflets sessile, obovate, rounded and entire, 5–8 mm long, 4–7 mm wide. Inflorescences basal, 1-flowered; peduncles to 18 cm long, with scattered hairs, the hairs spreading. Bracts situated in the upper half of pedicel, linear, to 5 mm long, calli absent. Sepals elliptic to linear, 4–5 mm long, generally glabrous, margins hyaline and densely ciliate, with some very short hairs on the inner surface at the apex, with a broad purple central stripe, with 2 yellow calli. Petals obovate, 10–13 mm long, bright yellow with reddish lines, sometimes hairy on outer surface. Stamens at 2 levels; filaments: the longer set pubescent, the shorter set glabrous in the lower half. Ovary with sparse hairs at the apex on the dorsal side. Styles pubescent. Capsules not developed in Australia.

Environment

A weed of paddocks and disturbed sites in the Grenfell area. Possibly originally introduced in the early 1900s from seed in a feedlot according to one of the property owners in the area (label notes on Purdie 10609).
