Characteristics

Oxalis psammophila G.Will., a new species, rises from sub-ovoid to elliptical tubers situated ± 140 mm below sand level. Tubers 12-20 x 10-8 mm, covered with several layers of brown, rough, fibrous sheaths; apex drawn out, acute. Petioles and peduncles basal, rising from a series of imbricating deltoid bracts, largest 5 x 5 mm. Leaves and flowers increasing in size as season progresses; leaves 3-10 depending on season; petiole about 30 x 1 mm, lightly tuberculated in young leaves; leaflets 3, very shortly petiolate, broadly rounded cuneate, divided to the base with a shallow apical notch and thickened outer margin; upper surface rough, dark olive-green with darker margins, red in young plants, undersurface dark beetroot-red with prominent veins. Peduncles few, about same width as petioles, 1-flowered; first articulation up to 15 mm long, second articulation up to 40 mm in mature flowers, minutely tuberculate, bracts alternate, linear acute, minutely tuberculate, up to 2.8 mm long; buds minutely tuberculate, hanging downwards before opening. Sepals bimorphic, light pea-green with a maroon border, outer ± 5 x 2.5 mm, inner 6 x 2.5 mm, rounded oblong with one to several incised apical notches and reddish calli towards apices, outer surfaces with few minute tubercles, margins reddish with scattered, stiff, low cilia, inner surfaces glabrous. Corolla tube light yellow to pinkish yellow, cup-shaped 4-6 mm deep. Petals pink, pinkish white to white, obliquely cuneate, rounded at apex with occasional crinations, up to 25 mm long including 4-5 mm (claw) fused with corolla tube and 12-15 mm broad. Styles and stamens not expanding on release from corolla tube. Filaments longest 5-6 x 0.6 mm, tuberculate with ± glabrous rounded basal swelling 1.2 mm long; shortest ± 2 x 0.4 mm, glabrous and without basal swelling; anthers all up to 0.8 mm long. Ovary 2.5 x 1.2 mm, with distinct sinuses, surface with scattered minute tubercles and round to halfmoon-shaped calli mostly towards the longitudinal sinuses. Styles up to 8 x 0.5 mm with a few scattered tubercles; stigmas rounded to horizontal rugose, about 0.8 mm across. Capsules globose, elongating and extending beyond calyx.
