Characteristics

Leaf blades 7.5–15.5 × 3.5–12 cm, ovate or ovate-oblong, acute, subacuminate or shortly acuminate at the apex, markedly unequally auriculate at the base, dull with a finely wrinkled surface (at least when dry), scabrid to ± glabrous above, tomentose finely pubescent or ± glabrous and with nerves densely to sparsely covered with longer hairs beneath; midrib crested above, prominent beneath; lateral nerves in c. 5 main pairs; tertiary nerves not raised on either surface, occasionally discolorous below; domatia present as denser tufts of hairs in nerve axils; petiole 4–8 mm long, densely pubescent; stipules narrowly triangular to deltate, pubescent or ± glabrous outside, mid-nerve rarely apparent.

Inflorescences occasionally borne at the apical node, but more usually in the next 2–3 nodes down; many-flowered, forming oblong or conical panicles, at first narrow but widening as flowers mature, 2–3.4 × 1.5–3 cm across (excluding the flowers); peduncles 3–6 mm long, densely or sparsely pubescent; scarcely branched or with lower branches up to 5 mm long; pedicels 3–7 mm long; bracts/bracteoles 3–8 mm long, lanceolate or narrowly lanceolate, pubescent or ciliate.
Calyx glabrous; tube 1.5–2 mm long; limb-tube slightly wider than tube, 1–1.5 mm long; lobes 1.25–2.5 mm long, triangular below, subulate above, separated by sinuses at the base.
Fruit greyish-olive-green or brown when dry, 3–4 × 1.7–3 cm, pyriform, crowned by persistent calyx limb; pedicels lengthening, 1.2–2 cm long.
Corolla glabrous outside; tube 4–6.2 × 0.16–0.2 cm; lobes 7–8 × 1.6–2 mm, oblong-lanceolate, acuminate.
Much-branched shrub or small tree (0.5)1–3(5) m tall; young stems densely pubescent.
Anthers exserted, long acuminate, with sagittate base.
Pollen presenter 1.5 × 0.75 mm, spindle-shaped.
Seeds fawn or light brown, 6 mm long, striated.
