Characteristics

Shrubs, occasionally prostrate. Lvs simple, entire or sharply serrate, usually opposite or verticillate, shortly petiolate; stipules small or 0. Infl. axillary or terminal, lax or dense, racemose; bracts and bracteoles small, usually deciduous. Calyx somewhat bilabiate; calyx teeth equal; upper 2 teeth partly connate; lower 3 teeth free. Corolla yellow, red or mixed with purple or orange; petals clawed. Stamens free; anthers uniform. Ovary usually hairy; style incurved; stigma small, terminal. Pod turgid, ± straight, dehiscent, 4-many-seeded; seeds smooth, with or without a strophiole.
