Evil-smelling climbing shrub to 3.6 m. long; stems pubescent to velvety hairy with brownish or purplish hairs when young, later ridged and pubescent.. Leaves opposite or in whorls of 3; blades elliptic, oblong or ovate, 2–10(–18.3) cm. long, 0.9–6.3(–13) cm. wide, acuminate at the apex, rounded to cordate at the base, pubescent with curled adpressed hairs above, densely velvety-tomentose beneath or pubescent only on the nerves; petiole 0.4–11 cm. long, pubescent to velvety pubescent; stipules ovate-oblong to triangular-acuminate, 4–10 mm. long, 2–4 mm. wide, sometimes slightly divided at the extreme tip.. Inflorescences condensed axillary panicles or sometimes terminal at the ends of axillary branches and, in some cases where the leaves are suppressed, forming a compound raceme of panicles up to 21 cm. long in the fruiting state; peduncle 1–4(–10.5) cm. long, brownish or purplish velvety pubescent; pedicels 0.5–0.9 mm. long..
