Characteristics

A robust palm. It grows 5-6 m high. The trunk is 25-30 cm across. The leaves are 3-4 m long. The leaflets are arranged irregularly. The base of the leaves is fibrous and remains on the trunk. The flowering stalk is 2 m long. The fruit are oval and 3-4 cm long by 2.5 cm wide. The seeds are oval and 2-2.5 cm long. They are oily.

Dry, narrow valleys with low semideciduous forests in the lower parts gradually moving to grassy or shrubby slopes and ridges in the higher parts, at elevations from 1,700-2,200 metres.
