Characteristics

Tree 5–40 m. high (fide F.C.B.), usually about 5–15 m. in East Africa; bark grey-brown, fairly smooth, with very fine longitudinal striations; branchlets glabrous, or sometimes (especially in Kenya) ± pubescent when young.. Leaves glabrous, or rarely with some pubescence especially on rhachis, petiolules and near leaflet-bases; leaflets ± falcate and lanceolate, oblong-lanceolate, or sometimes ovate, (2.5–)4–10(–15, fide F.C.B.) cm. long, (1.4–)1.8–4.3(–6, fide F.C.B.) cm. wide, tapering-acuminate at apex, rounded to broadly cuneate at base; network of veins very close and rather prominent on both surfaces.. Inflorescence glabrous except for bracts; pedicels 1.5–3 cm. long; bracteoles thick and hard, elliptic or oblong-elliptic, 2–3–3.2(–3.7, fide F.C.B.) cm. long, 1–1.8 cm. wide, glabrous outside, densely tomentellous within..
