Characteristics

A low much branched shrub, up to 90 cm high, the young stems tomentose. Leaves much dissected, 15-25 mm long, all alike, crowded, with mixed long and short hairs when young, glabrescent, the apiculum well developed, somewhat acute. Peduncle short, occasionally lacking, densely tomentose, the bracts few, small. Spike 20-30 mm long, 20-25 mm wide, spherical or somewhat elongated, the partial inflorescences crowded. Bracts subtending each partial in-florescence about 3 mm long, broadly obovate, with a dark, acute tip, the bracts at the base with a slightly longer tip than those higher up, the tip reflexing slightly as the flower opens, densely tomentose with a tuft of longer hairs near the tip. Floral bracts similar to the subtending bracts, one third or less the length of the mature bud. Perianth of the mature bud 7-9 mm long, densely tomentose, with a stiff upwardly directed hairs on the limb, all segments alike. Style with somewhat sparse stiff hairs on the lower half, pollen presenter dark red, about.8 mm long, distinctly wider than the style.
