Characteristics

A much branched shrub, usually less than 0.8 m high but occasionally as much as 1.0 m Young stems with a mixture of long and short hairs which do not persist. Leaves up to 50 mm long but usually shorter, much divided; on mature plants those below the inflorescence with a tendency to become flattened at the apex of the lobes; the surface with short curly hairs mixed with some longer when young, soon deciduous leaving a rough surface; the apiculum pale or reddish, somewhat narrower than the lobes. Peduncle shorter than the spike, densely hairy, with short, scattered, ovate or lanceolate woolly bracts. Spike 20-70 mm long, 15-30 mm wide, Bracts subtending the partial inflorescences rather more than half as long as the floral bracts, white woolly, broadly ovate, narrowing to a triangular tip. Floral bracts elliptical, about one third the length of the mature flower bud. Perianth of the mature bud 10-12 mm long, claws of the segments with long hairs at the base, shorter and powdery in appearance higher, with long ascending hairs on the limb; all segments alike. Style reddish, sparsely hairy in the middle third; pollen presenter slightly grooved with a knee-like bend at the base, about 1 mm long, not much wider than the style.
