Characteristics

A branched shrub, 0.8-1.7 m high. Young stems puberulous, becoming glabrous or nearly so. Leaves glabrous, variable in shape, usually with some entire near the inflorescence, the rest more or less dissected, the proportion of entire to dissected leaves varying from plant to plant; apiculum obtuse, wider on entire leaves. Peduncle short or lacking, the inflorescence clasped by the uppermost leaves. Spike 25-50 mm long, 20-25 mm wide, dense or somewhat lax. Bracts subtending the partial inflorescences ovate, concave, shortly tomentose, those at the base with a long needle-like prolongation occasionally reaching the tip of the floral bracts, the prolongation becoming reduced to a mere apiculum near the apex of the spike, most bracts about half the length of the floral bracts. Floral bracts oblong, concave, obtuse, with a felt-like covering of short hairs, half as long as the mature flower bud or a little less, Perianth in the mature bud about 14 mm long, the segments covered with shaggy upwardly directed hairs, those on the limb longer, all segments similar. Style glabrous; pollen presenter about 2 mm long, with 8 longitudinal ridges, a little broader than the style, widening slightly in the upper half.
