Characteristics

Small branched shrubs with the aspect of a shrubby species of Serruria, up to 70 cm high. Young stems sparsely tomentose, glabrescent, inconspicuously ribbed. Leaves up to 50 mm long, mostly dissected, the lobes slender, a few near the inflorescence entire or nearly so, glabrous, the apiculum obtuse. Inflorescence sessile or nearly so, globose, 15-30 mm in diameter, surrounded at the base by foliage leaves. Peduncle short or lacking, pubescent, sterile bracts when present, filiform, straight, not reflexing. Bracts subtending the partial inflorescences usually shorter than the floral bracts, with a broad coriaceous base and thin wing-like margins, the tip leaf-like, becoming shorter towards the apex. Floral bracts about one third the length of the mature bud, ovate, acute, concave, shortly pubescent below, glabrous near the tip, ciliate. Perianth cream coloured, about 8 mm long in the mature bud, covered with somewhat shaggy adpressed hairs, the hairs projecting slightly beyond the limb, all segments alike. Style slender, glabrous; pollen presenter 1.2 mm long, narrowly fusiform, yellowish in colour, with an obscure knee-like bend at the base.
