Characteristics

Perennial liana to 45 m long, with simple axillary tendrils, glabrous. Stem terete, robust. Stipules triangular, 1–2 mm long. Leaves alternate; lamina, simple, ovate, (7–) 12–18 (–23) cm long, (3–) 5–10 (–12) cm wide, with (0–) 1–4 (–6) glands scattered along abaxial primary veins, apex acute or oblique, base oblique, margin entire; petiole 1–4 cm long, with (0–) 2 (–4) glands (0.5–2 mm diam.) in lower third. Inflorescences (1–) 2–8 (–16)-flowered, primary axis terminated by a flower; peduncle (0–) 1–3 (–6) cm long. Flowers functionally unisexual, 10–20 mm diam.; pedicels (0.3–) 0.5–3 (–6) cm long; bracts 2, triangular, 1–2 (–4) mm long, c. 1 mm wide. Sepals (4) 5, greenish white abaxially, white adaxially, (4–) 7–12 mm long. Petals (4) 5, greenish white abaxially, white adaxially, (3–) 7–12 mm long. Corona 2 series of filaments, greenish white; outer series (3–) 5–7 mm long; inner series 1.5–3 mm long; operculum white with an orange band at apex, membranous, striated, 2–4 mm long, upper margin fimbriate. Androgynophore 0.5–20 mm long, straight. Stamens (3–) 4–5, smaller in female flowers. Styles 3 (4), stigmas sessile in male flowers. Fruit a globose berry, 2–5 cm diam., orange-red when mature. Seeds reticulate.
