Characteristics

Perennial liana to 15 m long, with simple axillary tendrils, glabrous. Stem terete, robust. Stipules triangular, 1–3 mm long. Leaves alternate; lamina simple, ovate, elliptic or obovate, 7–22 cm long, 3–9 cm wide, with (0–) 1–5 (–8) glands in the junctions of midvein and primary veins, often paired on either side of midvein; apex acute to oblique; base oblique to cuneate; margin entire; petiole (0.5–) 1–3 cm long, with (0–) 2 glands (c. 2 mm diam.) in lower half. Inflorescences 2–4 (–6)-flowered, primary axis terminated by a tendril; peduncle (2–) 5–15 cm long. Flowers functionally unisexual, 18–35 mm diam.; pedicels 1–4 cm long; bracts 2, short triangular, 1–2 mm long, c. 1 mm wide. Sepals (4) 5, greenish white abaxially, white adaxially, 8–12 mm long. Petals (4) 5, white, (3–) 8–12 mm long. Corona 2 series of filaments, white; outer series 8–12 mm long; inner series 4–5 mm long; operculum white, membranous, striated, 2–4 mm long, upper margin fimbriate. Androgynophore 2–4 (–7) mm long, straight. Stamens 6–8. Styles (4–) 6–7, shorter in male flowers. Fruit a globose berry, 6–10 cm diam., yellow-green when mature. Seeds wrinkled with radial striations near margins.
