Perennial liana to c. 10 m long, with simple axillary tendrils, glabrous or occasionally finely pubescent. Stem terete, stout. Stipules linear, 5–15 mm long, 1–2 mm wide. Leaves alternate, simple; lamina ovate, ovate-lanceolate or orbicular-ovate, 6–15 (–25) cm long, 4–10 (–15) cm wide, apex acute or acuminate, base rounded, truncate or cordate, margin entire to slightly serrate, glandular; petiole (1.5–) 3–6 cm long, with 2 or occasionally 3 or 4 ovate glands (to 1.5 mm diam.) below or just above middle of petiole. Flowers bisexual, borne singly in leaf axils, 6–7.5 (–9) cm diam.; pedicels 5–7 cm long; bracts 3, ovate, 4–6 cm long, 3–5 cm wide, green, entire, without glands, connate at base. Sepals adaxially white with purple spots, abaxially green, 3.5–4.5 cm long, keeled, terminating in an awn 2–7 mm long. Petals greenish white with purple spots, 3–3.5 cm long. Corona of 4 series of filaments; outer 2 series white with red bands in basal half, white with blue bands in apical half; outer series 8–15 mm long; second outer-most series 1.5–3 (–4) cm long; inner series c. 1 mm long. Operculum pale green, membranous, c. 6 mm long. Androgynophore 12–20 mm long. Stamens 5. Styles 3. Fruit an ovoid to globose berry, 4–5 cm long, 3.5–5 cm wide, greenish yellow to light orange when mature; pericarp very hard. Seeds finely reticulate.

The plant is a vigorous vine. It grows 10 m long. The leaves are light green and can be curved back at the tip. They are 6-15 cm long. The flowers are white and purple. They are 4-5 cm across and have a scent. The fruit has a yellow-green hard shell. It is round and smooth and 5 cm across. It has white dots on the skin.
Involucral bracts very large, extending beyond the flower, acute-acuminate; stipules lanceolate, longly acuminate, 1-1½ cm; flowers c. 10 cm ø, mottled purple-red; corona filaments banded; fruit c. 4 cm ø.
A tropical plant. It grows in more tropical conditions than purple passionfruit. It suits the warm, wet tropical lowlands. In South America it grows up to 1,700 m above sea level. In Jamaica it grows between 150-400 m above sea level.
