Characteristics

Perennial vine to c. 7 m long, with simple axillary tendrils, sparsely to densely pubescent. Stems terete, striate, slender, the base woody and cork-covered. Stipules narrowly ovate-triangular, sometimes slightly falcate, 2.1–6.9 mm long, 0.2–0.9 mm wide. Leaves alternate, simple and ovate to elliptic or rarely obovate to 3-lobed for over ⅕ of length; lobes widest near base, rarely toward apex, ovate, oblong or elliptic, rarely obovate, acute, rarely obtuse or rounded, each with a single main vein; lamina 1.8–8.8 (–12) cm long, (0.3–) 1.4–8.2 (–10.6) cm wide, without glands, base cuneate, margin entire; petiole 0.3–1.8 (–2.9) cm long, with (1) 2 glands (0.3–0.8 mm diam.) above middle. Flowers bisexual, borne in pairs in leaf axils, (6.9–) 11.7–20.4 mm diam.; hypanthium 2.8–4.1 mm diam.; pedicels (2–) 3.3–9.4 (–17) mm long; bracts absent or rarely 1, narrowly ovate, 0.4–0.6 mm long, c. 0.1 mm wide. Sepals greenish yellow, (2.3–) 4–7 (–8.3) mm long. Petals absent. Corona of 2 series of filaments, greenish yellow with yellow towards apex or reddish purple at base, greenish yellow in middle and yellow at apex; outer series 1.2–4 mm long; inner series 0.8–1.3 mm long. Operculum greenish yellow or reddish purple, plicate, (0.6–) 1–1.4 mm long. Androgynophore straight, (1.7–) 2.2–3.5 mm long. Fruit a globose or ellipsoid berry, 7.6–9.5 mm long, 6.9–8.8 mm wide, dark purple when mature. Seeds reticulate.

Floral bracts absent or minute. Flowers: floral tube absent; sepals green, often becoming purple, 4–8 × 2–3 mm; petals absent; corona filament whorls 2, outer filaments green, green-white, or purple basally, yellow apically, linear, terete, 2–4 mm. Berries blue-black, globose to ovoid, 5–13 × 5–10 mm. 2n = 24.
