Characteristics

Perennial vine to c. 3 m long, with simple axillary tendrils, densely hirsute. Stem 3-angular, striate, slender. Stipules linear (1.3–) 2.8–3.4 (–6) mm long, (0.2–) 0.3–0.4 (–0.8) mm wide. Leaves alternate, 2-or rarely 3-lobed for ⅓ to ½ of length, with 3 main veins; lobes widest at base, lanceolate or ovate-lanceolate, obtuse, acute or mucronulate; sinus between lobes in 2-lobed leaves rounded or truncate; lamina (2.1–) 3.7–4.7 (–10.2) cm long, (3.2–) 4.4–5.7 (–12.2) cm wide, without glands, base cordate, margin entire; petiole (5–) 12–17 (–44) mm long, without glands. Flowers bisexual, borne singly in leaf axils, 3.5–5 cm diam.; pedicels (4–) 18–21 (–45) mm long; bracts absent. Sepals pink or light red, (1–) 1.5–2.7 (–2.9) cm long. Petals pink or light red, (8–) 18–21.5 (–24) mm long. Corona of 2 series of filaments; outer series red with white apex, (2.7–) 5.7–7 (–17.7) mm long; inner series white, 1–2 (–3) mm long, inside floral tube. Operculum white, membranous, 1.4–1.9 mm long. Androgynophore straight, 14.7–29.1 mm long. Stamens 5. Styles 3. Fruit an ellipsoid capsule, (2–) 3.2–3.5 (–5.3) cm long, 0.8–2.7 cm wide, hexagonal in cross-section, dark red when mature. Seeds transversely grooved.
