Characteristics

Perennial vine to c. 20 m long, with simple axillary tendrils, pubescent. Stems terete, ribbed. Stipules reinform, 4–7 mm long, 2–3 mm wide, with long arista at apex. Leaves alternate, 3-lobed for more than ⅔ length; lobes widest near middle, ovate, acuminate, each with a single main vein; lamina 5.5–11 (–16) cm long, 7–16 (–29) cm wide, without glands, pubescent abaxially, base cordate to truncate, margin serrate; petiole 1.5–4 cm long, with 1–4 pairs of minute glands. Flowers bisexual, borne singly in axils, pendent, 8–11 cm diam.; pedicels 3–10 cm long; bracts 3, ovate, 3–5 cm long, 2–3 cm wide, entire, connate for about ½ length. Hypanthium 6–8 cm long, 0.7–1 cm diam., light green outside, white inside. Sepals pink, 4.5–6 cm long, aristate terminating in an awn 3–4 mm long, eventually reflexed. Petals pink, 4–5.5 cm long, eventually reflexed. Corona of 1 series of white teeth on a purple ring. Operculum white, margin recurved. Androgynophore straight, 7–10 cm long. Stamens 5. Styles 3. Fruit an ellipsoid berry, 6–14 cm long, 3–4.5 cm wide, yellow to orange-yellow when mature. Seeds reticulate.

In Australia recorded growing in damp and disturbed places, on roadsides, in weedy areas, rainforest, eucalypt forest, shrubland, mallee scrub and swamps.

Not known in a truly wild location, the plant probably arose in cultivation. Occasionally naturalized at edges of cool montane forests.
