Characteristics

Shrub 2–3 m. tall; young branches ± square, faces connecting the stipules densely pubescent and faces connecting the axils glabrous to sparsely pubescent; older branches covered with dull buff bark.. Leaf-blades drying greenish grey or blackish, elliptic to narrowly obovate, 5–9 cm. long, 3–5 cm. wide, shortly acuminate at apex, acute to cuneate at base, slightly shiny and glabrous save for the midrib above, sparsely pubescent to pubescent beneath; bacterial nodules dot-shaped to elliptic, scattered but tend to concentrate near the midrib; petioles 0.3–1.4 cm. long, pubescent; stipules drying brown papery, lanceolate, 0.8–1 cm. long, aristate, pubescent outside, caducous.. Corymbs terminal on lateral shoots 2–10.5 cm. long, the longer shoots with nodes and the shorter shoots usually just with mature or immature leaves beneath the inflorescence, rather compact, 3–4 cm. across; primary inflorescence-branches 2–4 mm. long, pubescent; secondary and sometimes tertiary branches present; pedicels 2–5 mm. long, glabrous at base becoming glabrescent at apex; bracts rather stipule-like; bracteoles pale brown, papery.. Calyx-tube 1.5 mm. long, puberulous or with a few longer hairs as well; limb-tube 1.5 mm. long, a little wider than the tube; lobes linear from a triangular base, 3.5–5 mm. long, ± 0.5 mm. wide (or 1 mm. wide at base), glabrous or ciliate.. Corolla glabrous outside; tube 1.5 cm. long, not bearded at throat; lobes lanceolate-oblong, 8 mm. long, 3 mm. wide, acuminate.. Fruit black, 7 mm. in diameter, shiny, sparsely puberulous or with a few longer hairs; calyx-lobes persistent.. Mature seeds not known.
