Pavetta klotzschiana K.Schum.

Species

Angiosperms > Gentianales > Rubiaceae > Pavetta

Characteristics

Leaves not always fully mature at time of flowering; blades 6.2–10(12) × 2.3–5 cm, narrowly obovate or less often obovate, obtuse or sometimes acute, often apiculate or subacuminate, sometimes shortly acuminate at the apex, narrowly cuneate at the base, papery, glabrous to sparsely pubescent above and sparsely pubescent to pubescent below or occasionally entirely glabrous; lateral nerves in 7–8(10) main pairs, drying light brown, not prominent beneath; bacterial nodules elliptic to linear-elliptic or less often dot-like, arranged along the midrib and lateral nerves and sometimes with a few scattered; domatia absent or inconspicuous; petioles 8–14(16) mm long, pubescent or less often glabrous; stipules on mature branches 2.5–4(5) mm long including apiculum, broadly triangular or when near apex up to 6(7) mm long, deltoid acuminate, pubescent or glabrous outside, a few silky hairs inside.
More
Inflorescences moderately compact to lax, subumbellate to corymbose, 1.5–4.5 cm across (excluding corollas); primary inflorescence branches up to 15 mm long, pubescent; secondary and tertiary branches present or absent; pedicels 1–7 mm long, pubescent; often elements of inflorescence present in axils of subterminal leaves, occasionally such inflorescence elements are provided with a pair of rudimentary leaves; bracts 3–5 mm long, stipule-like in texture.
Calyx tube often drying blackish, c. 1 mm long, pubescent; limb-tube c. 0.5 mm long, pubescent; lobes 4–8 × 0.75–1 mm, linear-lanceolate or linear-triangular to narrowly triangular or sometimes linear, pubescent or rarely glabrous.
Inflorescence-supporting branches (2)6–16.5 cm long, sometimes with 1(2) naked nodes at ± mid-point, bearing 2(3) pairs of leaves near the apex but these are usually spaced so that the stipules scarcely overlap.
Corolla tube 1–1.8 cm long, c. 1 mm wide at the top, glabrous outside, not bearded at the throat; lobes 5–6.5 × 1.5–2.5 mm, oblong, apex obtuse to acuminate.
Subshrub or shrub 0.5–2(3–4) m tall; young branches glabrous or sparsely pubescent; older branches with greyish-buff bark.
Fruit black or greenish-grey, 5–8 mm in diameter, glabrescent; calyx limb persistent; pedicels somewhat accrescent.
Seeds dark grey, c. 4 mm in diameter, rugulose on convex face.
