Characteristics

Shrub or small tree, sometimes scrambling, 1.5–4.5(–7) m. tall; young branches pubescent, the older ones covered with thin buff to fawn bark.. Leaf-blades elliptic or occasionally broadly or narrowly elliptic, (3–)4.7–18(–21.5) cm. long, 1.6–8.5(–9.4) cm. wide, apex usually shortly acuminate, base obtuse, truncate or sometimes unequal, finely pubescent above, tomentose beneath or rarely glabrous save for the midrib beneath and the ciliate margin; bacterial nodules dot-like, moderately small, scattered, usually numerous; petiole 0.4–2.8(–4) cm. long, tomentose; stipules triangular, 5–8 mm. long, acuminate, pubescent outside, without silky hairs inside.. Corymbs terminal on main and lateral branches 2.5–14.5(–18.5) cm. long bearing 0–3 pairs of leaves at apex, sometimes with subsidiary corymbs from these nodes, lax or very lax, 2.2–9.5 cm. wide; primary inflorescence-branches 0.4–3 cm. long, tomentose; secondary and tertiary branches present; pedicels 1–8 mm. long, tomentose; bracts ovate, 4–8 mm. long, pubescent outside, with few silky hairs inside; bracteoles scale-like to filiform.. Calyx tomentose; tube 1–2 mm. long; limb-tube 1 mm. long, scarcely wider than the tube; lobes triangular to narrowly triangular, 2–5 mm. long, 0.75–1 mm. wide at the base.. Corolla-tube (1.4–)1.9–3.4 cm. long, 1.5 mm. wide at top, pubescent outside, not bearded at throat; lobes oblong, 4–6 mm. long, (1.25–)1.75–3 mm. wide, obtuse or acute.. Fruit black, 0.8–1 cm. in diameter, sparsely pubescent; calyx-limb persistent; pedicels tending to be accrescent.. Seeds brownish, 5 mm. wide, rugulose on convex face.
