Characteristics

A fairly robust shrub or small tree; occurring at forest margins, in woodland and on rocky outcrops in montane grassland. Bark: grey; young branchlets densely velvety. Leaves: elliptic, 2-8 x 1-3.5 cm, fairly thickly leathery, rather fleshy, with or without hairs, glossy green, 4-6 pairs of lateral veins slightly indented above, slightly ridged below, bacterial nodules dot-shaped, scattered, prominently raised on both surfaces, domatia absent; apex broadly tapering to rounded; base tapering; petiole up to 1.5 cm long. Flowers: white, calyx lobes needle-shaped, 6 mm long, corolla tube 12 mm long, lobes 6 mm long, style 3.5 cm long, in terminal heads on inflorescence-supporting branches with 1 node, with or without a pair of mature leaves at the top just below the flowers Fruit: round, up to 10 mm in diameter, fleshy, black, crowned with the remains of the persistent calyx.
