Species

Angiosperms > Gentianales > Rubiaceae > Pavetta

Characteristics

Multi-stemmed rhizomatous shrubs 0.5-2.3(3-4) m tall, forming large patches; stems branched or less often unbranched, often with nodes crowded close together, pubescent when young, covered with greyish bark when mature. Leaves borne at the apex of the branches, not always fully mature at time of flowering; blades oblanceolate to obovate, 4.5-9.2 x 2-4.3 cm, apex rounded or less often obtuse, base cuneate, somewhat shiny and scabrid above, pubescent to densely pubescent beneath, often somewhat bullate; lateral nerves in 7-9 main pairs; bacterial nodules inconspicuous, dot-shaped, scattered; petiole 5-7 mm long, glabrous to pubescent; stipule-limbs 3-5 mm long, triangular, gradually attenuate, glabrous or less often pubescent outside. Flowers with scent reported as sweet or unpleasant. Inflorescence-supporting branches suppressed or very abbreviated, leafless, up to 5 (7) mm long. Inflorescences crowded to moderately compact, up to 2 cm across (excluding corollas); primary inflorescence-branches 1.5-8 mm long, pubescent; secondary and occasionally tertiary branches present; pedicels up to 4 mm long, pubescent; bracts stipule-like, ± 4 mm long; bracteoles brown, membranous, inconspicuous. Calyx pubescent; tube 0.5-0.75 mm long; limb-tube 0.5-1 mm long divided ± to mid-point into triangular lobes. Corolla-tube 3.5-5 mm long, sparsely pubescent outside, not bearded at throat; lobes 2.5-3.5 x c. 1 mm, oblong-oblanceolate, obtuse to rounded. Fruit black, 6-7 mm in diameter, shiny, sparsely hairy; calyx-limb persistent; pedicels slightly accrescent, reaching 8 mm long. Seed dark grey, 5 mm wide, convex face somewhat rugulose.
