Characteristics

Stems prostrate, 2-6(-10) dm long, from a strong taproot or branched rootstock, thinly to densely covered with long spreading hairs. Leaves mostly 3-foliolate, uppermost occasionally 1-foliolate; stipules linear or linear-lanceolate, 0.8-1.5(-1.8) cm long; petioles 0.3-1 cm long; leaflets elliptic-obovate to obovate, apiculate, 3.5-6.5(-9) x (1.5-) 1.8-3(-3.5) cm, thinly pilose, with conspicuous lateral nerves (lower ones steeply ascending). Flowers yellow, (4-) 8-16, mostly crowded at the top of a short to long peduncle, sometimes 1-few inserted lower down; bracts linear-lanceolate, 6-12 mm long (abnormally lanceolate and up to 25 mm long); pedicels 1-2 mm long; bracteoles linear or setaceous, 1-5 mm long. Calyx 1-1.4 cm long, sparsely pilose to quite densely pubescent; upper lip 1.5-2.5 times as long as the tube, with the lateral sinuses usually as high as or higher than the upper sinus; upper lobes lanceolate-triangular to broadly triangular, sometimes acuminate or curved, 3-5.5 mm long. Standard elliptic to oblong-obovate, 1.3-2 cm long, glabrous or nearly so. Ovary 10-18-ovulate, glabrous to thinly hairy. Mature pods not seen, but probably little exceeding the calyx.
