Characteristics

Shrub up to c. 1 m high, erect, moderately to much branched. Cortex of old branches reddish brown to brown. Young branches often with bristly hairs as well as glands along branches. Leaves dentate to serrate, broadly lanceolate to spathulate, occasionally some leaves entire, 5-25 x 3-10 mm, flat, shining as if varnished, marginally somewhat involute; petiole more or less distinct, up to c. 3 mm; mid-vein more or less distinct. Capitula laxly corymbose to almost solitary, 15-20 x 8-10 mm. Involucre cyathiform. Involucral bracts 15-40 in c. 3 rows, acute, densely set with glands and bristly hairs, erecto-patent at anthesis. Florets yellow or with purplish tinge when dried, 15-35; corolla 8-11 x 1.5-2 mm; corolla lobes erect, apically with acute hairs, c. 1/6 of total length of corolla; epidermis cells containing many droplets but no crystals. Style 7-10 mm; style-branches linear, c. 2.5 mm, containing droplets but no crystals. Anthers c: 4.5 mm, without crystals in apical portion; tails very branched, 3 times longer than filament collar. Achenes narrowly cylindrical, 4-5 x 1-1.5 mm, c. 20-costate with small-but protruding knobs apically; crystals 10-15 in each cell. Pappus of 80-100 unequal, barbellate bristles in several rows, with large, deeply incised, bristle-like external scales.

Capitula discoid, solitary to laxly corymbose, pedunculate, terminal. Florets yellow, occasionally turning purplish with age. Flowering time Apr.-Nov. Pappus of barbellate bristles in several rows and outer row of large, deeply incised bristle-like scales. Cypselae narrowly cylindrical, ribbed.
Twiggy, aromatic shrublet to 30 cm. Leaves ovate, petiolate, coarsely toothed. Flower heads discoid, solitary and terminal, yellow.
