Characteristics

Shrub, up to 1 m high, moderately to much branched; branches ascending to erect. Cortex of old branches greyish brown; young branches without bristly hairs but glandular at least in portion of branch closest to capitulum. Leaves flat to slightly involute, dentate to almost lobate, lanceolate to spathulate, 5-15 x 3-10 mm, with more or less distinct midvein; petiole generally not very prominent, gradually attenuating toward base; lobes acute to obtuse. Capitula 10-15 x 8-10 mm, solitary. Involucre cyathiform. Involucral bracts up to c. 30, lanceolate to oblong, acute, cartilaginous with green, glandular midstripe without bristly hairs, erecto-patent after anthesis. Florets 15-20; corolla yellow or with purplish tinge when dried, 8-10 x 1.5-2 mm; corolla lobes of equal size, c. 1/6 of total length of corolla, apically with acute hairs; epidermis cells containing numerous small droplets but no crystals. Style c. 10 mm long; style-branches linear, somewhat flattened, c. 2.5 mm long, acute. Anthers c. 4.5 mm; tails very branched, c. 3 times as long as filament collar. Pollen 35 µ in diameter. Achenes 4-6 x 1-1.5 mm, c. 20-costate with not very protruding ribs, and with minute apical horns; crystals 10-15 in each cell. Pappus vellowish, with c. 50 unequal, barbellate bristles in several rows, with large, deeply incised, bristle-like scales externally.
