Characteristics

Shrublet up to 60 cm high, moderately branched; branches more or less ascending to erect. Cortex of old branches dark brown to reddish brown. Leaves entire, narrowly linear 5-25 x 1-2 mm, canaliculate, without distinct veins, with scattered glandular-hairs. Capitula 15-20 x 8-10 mm, solitary. Involucre cyathiform. Involucral bracts 25-30 in c. 3 rows, triangular to narrowly oblong, acute to apiculate, spreading at anthesis. Florets yellow or pale purplish when dried, 30-50; corolla 9-12 x 1-1.5 mm, symmetric; corolla lobes c. 1/7 of total length of corolla, with spiny hairs apically; epidermis cells with slightly crispy margins. Style 8-10 mm; style-branches linear, c. 2 mm, with crystal clusters. Anthers c. 3.5 mm, with rounded crystal clusters in apical portion; tails c. 3 times longer than filament collar. Achenes 4-7 x 1-2 mm, narrowly cylindrical, 15-20-costate, with horn-like knobs apically on ribs, sparsely hairy. Crystals as crystal sand. Pappus of 20-30 equal, barbellate bristles with external row of subulate, subentire scales.
