Characteristics

Erect, or straggling-flaccid annual or short-lived perennial herb, up to 0.2 m in diam., up to 0.5 m in height; spreading pilose-pubescent with short and longer hair, glabrescent, glandular hairs interspersed. Stipules oblong-lanceolate to oblong-ovate, 3-6 x 1.5-4.0 mm. Leaves simple, ovate in outline, margins 3-to 7-lobed and dentate-crenate, base cordate, green, rachis sometimes reddish; petioles 27-110(-177) mm long; laminae 30-77 x 21-65 mm, spreading pilose adaxially and abaxially, especially abaxially on the veins, glabrescent, with glandular hairs interspersed. Inflorescence axillary, pseudo-umbels, each with 1-3(-4) flowers; peduncles 12-58 mm long, spreading tomentose; bracts linear to linear-lanceolate, 3-4(-5) x 0.5-1.0 mm, abaxially pilose and adaxially pubescent; pedicels (1-)7-14 mm long. Hypanthium 2-12 mm long, spreading tomentose with glandular hairs interspersed. Sepals 5, lanceolate-linear, posterior lobe 7-8 x 1.5-2.5 mm, lateral lobes ca. 7 x ca. 1 mm, anterior lobes 7.0 x 0.7-1.5 mm, spreading pilose, especially towards the margins of the lobes (less dense or glabrous at the centre of the lobes). Petals 5, longer than sepals, white to magenta invariably with darker pink venation on posterior petals and sometimes on anterior petals, posterior petals oblong, asymmetrical, 10-12 x 2.5-3.5 mm, apices obtuse; anterior petals oblanceolate-spathulate, ca. symmetrical, 10-14 x 2-4 mm, apices obtuse. Androecium 7 fertile anthers, cream-light brown or pale pink, ca. 1 mm long, pollen orange. Gynoecium ovary ca. 2 mm long; style 3.0-3.5 mm long; stigma branches ca. 2 mm long, wine-red to purple. Fruit not seen. Flowering time: (July)October to February.
