Characteristics

Deciduous geophytes, 130-150 mm tall in flower. Tuber: turnipshaped, elongated or moniliform, with flaking, dark brown periderms, 15-20 x 10-15 mm. Leaves: radical, dry at flowering, erecto-patent, pinnately or bipinnately compound, petiolate; lamina regularly pinnate, widely trullate in outline, fan-shaped, 40-50 x 40-45 mm, pinnae obtriangular in outline, irregularly deeply incised, base cuneate, segments 2-6 mm wide, apices acute, usually ending in one or sometimes two stiff hairs, adaxially sparsely covered with stiff appressed hairs interspersed with short glandular hairs, abaxially hirsute with long, stiff appressed hairs interspersed with short glandular hairs, margins ciliate with stiff hairs; petiole 55-70 mm long, 1.0-1.2 in diam., rigid, erect, brownish green, hirsute with a mix of appressed stiff and curly hairs interspersed with short glandular hairs; stipules 7-13 mm long, subulate, adnate to petiole, apices free, ciliate. Inflorescence: scape 65-170 mm long, branched, bearing 2-3 pseudo-umbellets with 2-7 flowers each; peduncles 50-100 mm long, ca. 1 mm diam., pale green, densely covered with appressed short curly hairs interspersed with short glandular hairs; bracts triangular, 2-3 mm long, abaxially densely covered with appressed curly hairs interspersed with short glandular hairs; flower buds, flowers and fruits erect. Pedicel: ca. 0.5 mm long. Hypanthium: 13-16 mm long, 2.0-2.5 times the length of the sepals, pale green, densely covered with appressed curly hairs, interspersed with short glandular hairs. Sepals: 5, posterior one erect, others reflexed, linear-lanceolate, 6-7 x 1.5-2.0 mm, apices acute, green with membranous margins, abaxially densely covered with appressed curly hairs interspersed with short glandular hairs. Petals: 5, yellow to pale yellow, patent with apices curved backwards, posterior two with wine-red feather-like pink markings, spathulate, 12.5-14.0 x 3.0-3.5 mm, length/width ratio 3.5-4.5, apices rounded; anterior three with V-shaped wine red markings, spathulate, 12-13 x 2.5-3.0 mm, apices rounded. Stamens: 10, basally connate, staminal column 1.5-2.0 mm long, smooth, white; perfect stamens 5, concealed in the floral sheath, posterior one 2.5-3.5 mm long, lateral two 3.5-4.0 mm long, anterior two 4-5 mm long, shorter than the sepals, white; staminodes 2.0-2.5 mm long; anthers wine-red, 1.3-1.5 mm long, pollen orange. Gynoecium: ovary 1.5-2.5 mm long; style 0.5-0.8 mm long; stigma with 5 recurved branches, 0.5-1.0 mm long, dark red. Fruit: bases of mericarps 4 mm long, without glandular hairs, tails 15-20 mm long. Flowering is during late summer, from December to April.
