Characteristics

Deciduous geophytes, 150-200(-300) mm tall in flower. Tuber: turnip-shaped or elongated, sometimes moniliform, with flaking dark brown periderms, 10-45 x 10-15 mm. Leaves: radical, green, erecto-patent, pinnately compound, petiolate; lamina regularly pinnately to bi-pinnately incised, elliptic in outline, 50-110 mm long, pinnae obtrullate, 20-50 mm long, deeply incised, segments 1.5-3.0 mm wide, acute, ending with a single hair, adaxially and abaxially sparsely covered with short glandular hairs and appressed non-glandular hairs, margins sparsely ciliate; petiole 80-100 mm long, 1-3 mm diam., rigid, erecto-patent, covered with long glandular hairs interspersed with patent non-glandular hairs; stipules 8-10 mm long, subulate, adnate to petioles with apices free, ciliate. Inflorescence: scape 40-90(-180) mm long, branched, bearing 4-7 pseudo-umbellets with 3-7 flowers each; peduncles 40-100(-160) mm long, 1.5-2.0 mm diam., hirsute with appressed curly hairs interspersed with long glandular hairs; bracts lanceolate, 3-4 mm long, abaxially hirsute with stiff hairs, interspersed with glandular hairs; flower buds, flowers and fruits erect. Pedicel: ca. 0.5 mm long. Hypanthium: 18-28 mm long, 2.4-2.8 times the length of the sepals, hirsute with appressed curly hairs interspersed with long glandular hairs. Sepals: 5, posterior one erect, others reflexed, lanceolate, 6-8 x 2-3 mm, apices acute, green with pale reddish-brown apices and white margins, indumentum abaxially as on hypanthium. Petals: 5, cream-coloured or pale yellow, patent, flowers bell-shaped during anthesis; posterior two with or without wine-red feather-like markings, unguiculate widely obovate, 16-18 x 7-9 mm, length/ width ratio 2-3, apices rounded; anterior three without markings, unguiculate widely obovate, 13.5-16 x 6-8 mm, apices rounded. Stamens: 10, basally connate, staminal column 1.5 mm long, smooth, white; perfect stamens 5, concealed in the floral sheath, posterior one 2-2.5 mm long, lateral two 3-3.5 mm long, anterior two 6-6.5 mm long, shorter than the sepals, white; staminodes 2-2.5 mm long; anthers pale pink, 1.5 mm long, pollen yellow. Gynoecium: ovary 2.5-4 mm long; style 1-2 mm long, dark red; stigma branches 1-2 mm long, adaxially wine-red. Fruit: bases of mericarps ca. 4 mm long, with glandular hairs, tails ca. 25 mm long. It is a spring flowering species, flowering in September when the leaves are withering.
