Species

Angiosperms > Geraniales > Geraniaceae > Pelargonium l'hér.

Characteristics

Spreading-prostrate perennial herb, up to 0.40(-0.45) m in diam., up to 0.5 m in height; tomentose, glandular hairs interspersed. Stipules lanceolate-triangular, 3-6(-11) x 2-4 mm. Leaves conspicuously arranged in a basal rosette, oppositely or less frequently alternately arranged on spreading stems, simple, ovate to subcircular in outline, margins crenate-dentate, sometimes slightly lobed, base cordate, usually discolorous (darker adaxially and silvery-glaucous abaxially), rachis green-glaucous; petioles 5-174 mm long; laminae 11-57 x 13-60 mm, pubescent or tomentose adaxially and tomentose abaxially, with glandular hairs interspersed. Inflorescence axillary or leaf-opposed, with 2-10 flowers; peduncles 18-63 mm long; bracts lanceolate-ovate, 2-6 x 1-2 mm, abaxially tomentose-pilose, adaxially pubescent; pedicels 0.5-2.0(-4.0) mm long. Hypanthium 3-9(-11) mm long, tomentose-pubescent with glandular hairs interspersed. Sepals 5, elliptic-ovate, posterior lobe 4.0-5.5 x 2-3 mm, lateral lobes 4.0-5.5 x 1.2-2.5 mm, anterior lobes 4.0-5.5 x 1.5-2.0 mm, indumentum as for hypanthium, glabrescent. Petals 5, longer than sepals, pale pink, purple to lilac (white) with dark pink or purple venation and dark pink (and white) eyespots on posterior petals; posterior petals oblanceolate-oblong, asymmetrical, 6-8 x 1-3 mm, apices emarginate; anterior petals oblanceolate-oblong, symmetrical to somewhat asymmetrical, 5.0-8.5 x 0.8-4.5 mm, apices emarginate. Androecium 7 fertile anthers, 0.3-0.6 mm long, pink, pollen orange. Gynoecium ovary ca. 1.5-2.0 mm long; style ca. 0.5 mm long; stigma branches 0.5-1.0 mm long, pinkish-red. Fruit bases of mericarps 2.0-3.0 mm long, glandular, tails 9-14 mm long. Flowering period: Populations in the west tend to flower mainly from (May) September to November (winter rainfall region), while populations in the east tend to flower from (November)December to January(March) (summer rainfall region). However, flowering occurs sporadically throughout the year, which predicts that plants produce flowers in response to rain (flowers recorded in January, March, May, June, August, September, October, November, and December).
