Characteristics

Deciduous geophytes, 170-180 mm tall in flower. Tuber: turnipshaped, elongated or moniliform, with flaking, dark brown periderms, 15-40 x 10-30 mm. Leaves: radical, dry at flowering time, erecto-patent, pinnately compound, petiolate; lamina regularly pinnate, elliptic in outline, 25-75 x 20-35 mm, pinnae obtrullate, 10-25 x 5-9 mm, irregularly incised, segments obtuse, adaxially and abaxially hirsute to densely hirsute with long stiff hairs, margins ciliate with long patent hairs (visible to the naked eye); petiole 20-90(-120) mm long and ca. 1.5 mm diam., rigid, erecto-patent, covered with distally appressed stiff hairs sparsely interspersed with very short glandular hairs; stipules 10-12 mm long, subulate, adnate to petioles, apices free, ciliate. Inflorescence: scape 60-130 mm long, branched, bearing2-3 pseudo-umbellets with 4-10 flowers each; peduncles 40-75 mm long, ca. 1.5 mm diam., pale green, hirsute with a mix of appressed stiff and curly hairs sparsely interspersed with short glandular hairs; bracts subulate, 3-5 mm long, abaxially densely hirsute, margins ciliate; flower buds, flowers and fruits erect. Pedicel: ca. 0.5 mm long. Hypanthium: 16-24 mm long, 3.0-4.5 times the length of the sepals, pale green, densely hirsute witha mix of appressed stiff and curly hairs interspersed with short glandular hairs. Sepals: 5, posterior one erect, others recurved, linear-lanceolate, 6.0-7.5 x 1.2-2.0 mm, apices acute, green in centre with membranous margins, indumentum abaxially as on hypanthium. Petals: 5, cream-coloured to pale yellow, patent with apices of posterior two curved backwards, posterior two with wine-red feather-like markings, narrowly spathulate to linear, 18.0-18.5 x 3 mm, length/width ratio 6.0-6.2, apices rounded; anterior three without markings, narrowly spathulate to linear, 14-15 x 2 mm, apices rounded. Stamens: 10, basally connate, staminal column ca. 0.5 mm long, smooth, white; perfect stamens 5, concealed in floral sheath, posterior one ca. 1.5 mm long, lateral two ca. 2.5 mm long, anterior two 4.5-5.0 mm long, shorter than sepals; staminodes 1.0-1.5 mm long; anthers red, 1.5 mm long, pollen orange. Gynoecium: ovary 2.0-2.5 mm long; style 1 mm long; stigma with 5 recurved branches, 1 mm long, dark red. Fruit: not seen. It flowers during summer, in November and December, after the leaves have died.
