Characteristics

Perennial decumbent, straggling or semiprostrate herb up to 7.5 dm. long; rootstock usually tuberous, up to 1.4 cm. in diameter; stems slender, herbaceous, hollow, mostly covered with a deflexed pubescence intermingled with long patent hairs, angled and often swollen at the nodes; internodes sometimes much reduced in length.. Leaves may be opposite, sometimes alternate especially the lower ones, frequently in basal rosettes; lamina 3-or 5-partite, hastate in outline, 2.5–12.2 cm. long, 2–10.5 cm. wide, long-haired; petiole 1.5–18 cm. long, covered with short intermingled with long hairs; stipules linear-lanceolate, 5–10(–15) mm. long, 2–3 mm. wide at the base, long-haired on the abaxial surface and along the margins, subglabrous on the inner surface, cuspidate (sometimes bifid) at the apex.. Inflorescence of (2–)4–9 flowers; peduncles 6–36 cm. long, mostly leaf-opposed, pubescent with short and long hairs; free part of the pedicel 2–6 mm. long; bracts usually more than the number of the flowers, linear-lanceolate, 5–10 mm. long, 1–1.5 mm. wide, covered with few but long hairs.. Sepals linear-lanceolate, lorate or narrowly oblong, 6–12 mm. long, 1–3 mm. wide, glandular and rather pubescent, ciliate and hyaline along the margins.. Spur 15–35 mm. long, adnate nearly to the base, hispid and glandular.. Petals 5, oblong-spathulate, greenish-yellow, creamy-green, pale lemon greenish-white, or just green with purple veining at the base of the posterior petals, the 2 posterior ones 9–16 mm. long, 4–6 mm. wide, the 3 anterior ones 7–12 mm. long, 3.5–5 mm. wide.. Stamens connate at the base for 1–2.5 mm., crimson to purple; antheriferous filaments 7, 2–5 mm. long; staminodes 3, 1–1.8 mm. long; anthers 1.1–1.6 mm. long, 0.6–0.8 mm. wide, red.. Ovary tomentose (woolly); rostrum indistinct at the flowering stage; style 0.5–1 mm. long; stigmas 1.2–1.6 mm. long, pink-red.. Fruit 2.5–5.2 cm. long, at maturity equal or slightly longer than the spur plus pedicel, pubescent; mericarps 6.5–8 mm. long, 1.5–2 mm. wide.. Seeds 3.9–4.4 mm. long, 1–1.3 mm. wide; testa minutely reticulate, pale brown.
