Species

Bryophytes > Hypnales > Thuidiaceae > Pelekium

Characteristics

Plants pinnate to occasionally bipinnate, medium-sized, pale green to yellowish green, sordid green, or brownish. Stem arching, up to c. 6 cm long. Paraphyllia mostly dense, in majority short and simple, but mixed with longer and often branched ones, cells isodiametrical, terminal cell truncate, pluripapillate. Stem leaves 0.5-0.9(-0.1) by 0.4-0.7 mm, cordate-triangular to broadly cordate-triangular, closely set, strongly incurved-twisted from a widely patent base when dry, widely patent when moist, strongly keeled and longitudinally plicate both wet and dry; apex gradually to rather abruptly acuminate; margin strongly recurved, upwards becoming flat, papillate-crenulate to almost entire; costa strong, abaxially strongly prominent and smooth or nearly so; leaf cells 7-10(-12) by 5-8 µm, weakly to strongly mamillate and uni-papillate, often with a few pluripapillate cells in the basal part of the leaf; terminal cell pluripapillate. Branches up to c. 6 mm long, mostly naked or bearing scattered paraphyllia. Branch leaves up to 0.9 mm long, asymmetrically triangular-ovate to narrowly ovate, mostly strongly incurved-twisted from a patent base when dry, spreading and mostly complanate when moist; base broadly rounded at one side of the leaf, less rounded and in-flexed at the other; apex acute to occasionally slightly acuminate, acumen mostly abruptly narrowed to a bluntly acute apex, occasionally ± acute, more rounded-acute in the distal leaves; margin mostly finely papillate-crenulate; costa abaxially prominent, distal abaxial cells smooth to papillate or shortly spinose-projecting; leaf cells isodiametrical or nearly so, c. 5-7 µm across, mamillate and unipapillate, papillae occasionally rather indistinct Inner perichaetial leaves up to 3.8 mm long, gradually narrowed to a straight or weakly flexuose subula; margin ciliate. Seta (10 ) 12-20(-24) mm long, reddish to pale orange, smooth. Theca 1.0-1.5 mm long, ovoid to elliptical, brownish, inclined to cernuous. Endostome cilia in groups of 1-3, free to partly united. Spores c. 10-15 µm across. Operculum c. 0.8-1.0 mm long. Calyptra c. 1.8-2.7 mm long.
